Morgan Lane has just completed grad
school, and has accepted a job at Baylor Industries with the help of her
father, who just so happens to be golf buddies with Drake Baylor Sr., CEO. Morgan has lived her 24 years of life under
her parents thumbs, and is more than eager to start living life and carving
successful career for herself.
Drake Baylor Jr. is being groomed to
take over as CEO of Baylor Industries upon his father’s retirement. Although he was raised in an affluent
household, his formative years were rough, leading to a string of bad
decisions, and hard lived years. In
order to take over as CEO, his father has given him a set of rules to live by
for an indefinite period of time: No drugs, limited alcohol consumption, and
absolutely no relationships whatsoever with women-his greatest weakness. If Drake can abstain from those three things,
work hard, and gain his father’s trust, he can have the keys to the Kingdome.
Drake meets Morgan on her first day at
Baylor Industries, and the phrase “love at first sight” doesn’t even come close
to describing what is felt between them.
Their instant attraction is a magnetic pull that is stronger than either
one of them can handle. Now Drake and
Morgan are faced with figuring out how to fight for their future together,
hoping not to get caught “Breaking the Rules”.
Author’s Favorite Quotes from Breaking the Rules Part I
by L.K. Lewis
“Mr.
Baylor, I can assure you that although our fathers are golf buddies and that
may have helped to secure my position here at Baylor Industries, I am a bright
and competent person, who has worked very hard to forge a career on my own,
even though I’m only about two hours into it. My mother may think that a
well-fitting dress, highlights and a smile can take you far in the corporate
world, but I believe that while that may help with first impressions, you have
to actually use your brain to get the job done,” I answer confidently, trying
my best to keep the stank off my tone.
L.K:
This
quote from Morgan perfectly depicts how strongly she feels about starting a
life and career for herself. As an adult living out from under her parents
control for the first time in her life, it is so important for her to make it
on her own, using her brains, not body. I also love that she has a little
attitude, and is not afraid to use it, however her years of etiquette lessons
prevent her from being too unprofessional.
“IDK
my BFF Amanda, they are not from my mom. But the shots came directly from the
bartender, so I don’t see any harm in throwing them back and shaking it a
little on the dance floor, I’m ready to drop this week like a bad habit!”
“I
hear that my BFF Morgie, bottoms up, then booties shake!” Amanda giggles.
L.K:
I love this silly banter between Morgan and her BFF Amanda. Their language, or
the fact that they call each other BFF may seem a little childish, or immature,
but it’s also a reminder that although these girls are now in careers, and
further into adulthood, they are still only 24 years of age. Morgan is depicted
throughout the book as both serious and career driven, or sexy, sweet and
romantic when she’s with Drake. I like the low key, age appropriate way Morgan
and Amanda interact, it reminds me of how I still giggle with my sister Lauren
(also my BFF) even though we are now in our 30’s!
“You
are the most beautiful and intelligent woman I have ever met. I find myself
completely awestruck at your understanding of our clientele and the insight you
have given as to how to meet their needs. You have definitely proven that you
have the brains to get the job done. I’ve done my best to actually listen to
you during our meetings, but quite honestly, all I can really do is think about
your soft sweet lips and how I want to hold you and kiss them for hours at a
time. I steal little glances into your eyes, but have to tear my eyes from
yours when those glances meet because their intense hazel color makes my pulse
race. I want so badly to be with you. To get to know you. To make love to you.
To feel your breasts in my hands. To taste you. I was jealous of Adrian on
Friday because I felt a familiarity between the two of you, and I want us to
have that. When he got in the elevator with you, I suddenly felt my chest
tighten with the fear that he had the chance to do everything with you that I
can’t, and it tore me in two.”
L.K:
This
quote is from Drake, and it is the first time he reveals that he has feelings
for Morgan He is also apologizing to her for making an inappropriate comment in
the elevator, which is somewhat comical to me, everything he has just done with
her in the office elevator is extremely inappropriate, yet it was his words
that offended Morgan. . I love that he has just been so domineering with
Morgan, but lust, and maybe even a little fear or jealousy softens him a bit as
he tells her all of the sweet and sultry things he thinks of when he thinks
about her.
“You
know my father got me the job with your dad’s company, and until about five
seconds ago, I felt very fortunate to be working with you. To answer your
questions, Drake, Adrian was my college boyfriend. I broke things off with him
before we graduated. He wanted to get serious, and I wanted grad school. I had
no idea he would be bringing his company’s business to Baylor, but you should
thank your lucky stars he has because I’m pretty sure my being on the account
sealed the deal, and your father now stands to make a considerable amount of
money because of it. I pretended to have just met Adrian because I didn’t want
our past relationship to hinder our chances of working with his company.
Another thing; yes I told you I was yours, and I meant it, but that was right
before you told me we didn’t stand a chance of being together, so I guess I’m
not really yours now, am I? Why would I want to give myself to you anymore when
you have such disregard for me or my feelings? May I remind you that although
I’m out to dinner with someone I consider to be an old friend, you are on an
actual date! A fucking date, Drake! With the same girl you started flirting
with just moments after declaring we would never be a couple, which was just
seconds after I offered you my heart. So don’t you dare try to throw that in my
face. I’m not yours, Drake, and according to you I never will be, so step aside
and let me out of this goddamn closet you so rudely pulled me into, I have to
get back to my friend.”
L.K:
Until now, Drake has been leading Morgan on. He gives her hope that they can be
together, then breaks her heart. Morgan shows her true colors in this quote.
She finally stands up for herself and her heart, and yells at Drake for
basically being so careless with it. She even gets in a few jabs here and there
which shows a bit of spunk and spirit, which I love. This perfectly depicts
Morgan. She is smart, strong, and independent, but also has a sweet heart, and
a huge capacity for love, and Drake is the person she’s trying to share her
love with.
