REVIEW: DRIVEN BY K.BROMBERG

Rylee Thomas is used to being in control. But she’s about to meet the one man that just might make her enjoy losing it…

I am the exception to the rule.

In a world full of willing women, I’m a challenge to the roguish and achingly handsome Colton Donavan. A man used to getting exactly what he wants in all aspects of life. He’s the reckless bad boy constantly skating that razor thin edge toward out of control, on and off of the track.

Colton crashes into my life like a tornado: sapping my control, testing my vulnerabilities beyond their limits, and unintentionally penetrating the protective wall around my healing heart. Tearing apart the world I rebuilt so carefully with structure, predictability, and discipline.

I can’t give him what he wants and he can’t give me what I need. But after a glimpse beneath his refined exterior into the dark secrets of his damaged soul, can I bring myself to walk away?

Our sexual chemistry is undeniable. Our individual need for complete control is irrefutable. But when our worlds collide, is the chemistry enough to bring us together or will our untold secrets and battle of wills force us apart?

Our Review---
Courtney initially brought this series to my attention..if I recall correctly, it's gaining a ton of blogger end of the year awards and blogger love. We love and trust our fellow bloggers so we put it on our TBR list and when it popped up on Amazon Prime, I absolutely could not resist downloading it...IMMEDIATELY. I considered it an early Christmas treat to myself and just so you know...my next treat will be book 2 because I feel like I cannot stop reading about Rylee and Colton. Yeah, fairly certain the exact thing I saw was a smut book club award for the series either for in-the-rain sex or hood-of-the-car sex...and either reason to win a smut book club award and I was like "OMG SHELLEY, we have to read this." because that's how we roll! \m/ lol!

The synopsis gives you a taste of the story of these two (Rylee and Colton) so I won't rehash the fact that they have that electrifying chemistry that we love in our smut books (or maybe I will...) and I definitely don't want to spoil anything...but if you're like me, you want to know if you should read this and why. I think you're good. I didn't feel like the blurb really helped me figure out much how the story was going to go! And Shel gives NOTHING away to me! sigh. lol! But it was nice like she says to "discover it as it happens" without any spoilers...no matter how much I beg! And did I beg!

Rylee is this really smart, witty, and large hearted counselor who works for an amazing organization that takes care of young boys who have no other home to go to. She works tirelessly for the organization and her boys and is trying to find funding to not only maintain but expand what her organization does. Colton is the son of a Hollywood bigwig and is also a star by his own rights. He is a well known race car driver, is quite the ladies man and absolutely not anything Rylee is interested in. At an auction to raise money Rylee and Colton have a run in and the electricity that zaps between these two could light up Times Square..and then some. Their initial "encounter" if you will is very interesting...and hot. But then I totally see why Rylee has reason to come off as a b-word their for a bit. Then...it just kept on coming...gah, that girl spent more time in her head than I do not know what, and therefore made me take a while to warm up to her. I don't think I did at all until she goes to work and we see her in action over there! I was screaming at my kindle "Stop being frigid. You know you're gonna let him all up in your kool-aid...so just stop!" I don't know that she listened!

These two have issues. We know more about Rylee's...a little of Colton's...and while it's not super angsty, there are definite moments when you want to smack Colton while simultaneously hugging him and/or making out with him. He's just so infuriating (as are his BBB). Meanwhile, there are times that I want to cheer for Rylee's honesty and yet want to build a suit of armor to protect her--all at the same time (thank goodness for Haddie)! I do like Haddie. And she called it. As much as I want to run over Colton with his race car for being a grade-A douchebag, omigah he is damaged and funny and charming and mostly smarmy with some of his pick up lines...but I would probably fall for it hook, line and sinker...because I'm a sucker. So for that...I am dying to read the next book. His hot and cold back and forth is worth than the weather changes in the midwest...and let me tell you that is seriously insane stuff...so keep that in mind...and don't give up on this one! The hot and cold Colton will give you whiplash, so I'm not sure how I feel about that even still...but I was not put off enough to a)not finish the book and b) want to read the next installment.

The chemistry is off the charts...the sexual tension, his filthy mouth...GAH! It's good stuff. I have to agree with you on this one. It's the BBB (blonde bimbo brigade) that makes me want to smack him! But when he is 100% in the zone with trying to impress Rylee I got all melty inside. I need to smack myself for that too!

The ending, as I was telling Courtney, isn't really an ending or necessarily a cliffhanger...it's just insurance that you will absolutely, 100% read the next book..and I will! I will admit that the ending to this book makes me nervous about how book 2 will end since book 3 doesn't come out until March. If it ends like book 1, I might just die. I do. And because I am an avid prime member I cannot it for another day, but will most definitely be downloading at the first opportunity! Luckily the teaser for the next book is available to read at the end of this one. Please and Thank You KB, you about gave me an ulcer...!

HAPPY RELEASE DAY MONICA MURPHY! THREE BROKEN PROMISES IS LIVE!

ABOUT THREE BROKEN PROMISES:

Breakout New Adult sensation Monica Murphy returns with a hot new contemporary romance—a heartfelt story of second chances, forgiveness, and redemption.

Commitment. That’s what I really want from Colin. Ever since my brother, Danny, died in Iraq, Colin’s done so much to help me, including giving me a job at his popular restaurant so I can leave my crappy waitressing job at the strip joint. But lying in bed with him every night to comfort him from his horrible nightmares isn’t enough anymore. I know he feels guilty about Danny’s death, about not going to Iraq, but I can’t keep living this double life.

I love him desperately, but he’s got so many demons, and if he can’t open up to me now, then he’ll never be the real partner I need him to be. I gave him a month, and now I’m out of here. If he truly loves me like he says, he knows where to find me.
An Excerpt:
“You’re going to turn me away yet again, aren’t you?” she asks when I don’t say anything. The irritation in her voice rings clear as her entire body goes tense. “I can’t believe it. I offer myself up to you with no strings attached and you’re trying to figure out how to let me down easy. God, I am such a moron.”
Unable to hold myself back, I rush toward her, angry that she would insult herself. Panicked that she really is going to walk away and I’m going to lose my chance. Thinking too much sucks. I need to just let it happen. Take this opportunity that she’s presenting me.
And let her go when our time is up.
“You’re not a moron,” I murmur, reaching for her. I cup her face in my hands and position her so she has no choice but to meet my gaze. I skim my thumbs across her cheeks, feel her shudder at my touch. “You make an offer like that and a man needs to process it first.”
The unshed tears still glimmer in her eyes and one escapes, leaving a damp trail across her skin. Leaning in, I stop its descent with my lips, tasting the salt, hearing the catch in her breath. “We do this and it’s not going to be some half-assed thing, you know,” I whisper.
She closes her eyes, her tears tangled in her long, thick lashes. “What’s it going to be, then?”
“A discovery.” I nuzzle her nose with my own, breathing in her scent, her very essence. God, I could devour her! It’s taking everything within me to keep calm and not unleash all over her. “An exploration.”
“That sounds like . . . research.” Her breath hitches in her throat when I drop a tender kiss on the tip of her nose.
Chuckling, I shake my head. “It’s the farthest thing from research.” I drift my lips across her cheek, blazing a hot path on her petal-soft skin. “You’re right when you said I don’t do commitment. The closest thing I’ve ever been to commitment is . . . what I share with you.”
She tentatively places her hands on my hips, her fingers curling into the waistband of my jeans. Having her hands on me sends little darts of fire throughout my insides, making me harden in an instant. She has no idea what sort of effect she has on me. How much restraint I’m using at this very moment not to throw her over my shoulder like an oversexed caveman and cart her off to my bedroom.
“But it can be no more than friendship with added . . . benefits.” I lift my head so I can look into her troubled gaze. She doesn’t like what I have to say and I don’t like it either, but I have to be honest. Stringing her along and making her believe this is something more is a mistake.
The two of us together would never work. I’m too damn selfish. I’d disappoint her. I’d hold her back when she needs her freedom. I’m not worthy of her. She’s everything sweet and good in my life, where there’s little sweet and good remaining.
I’ve kept her—and our relationship—as pure as possible even after all of these years. With the realization that she’s leaving me, that we’ll never be together again, I need to take my opportunities where I can.
Jen bites her lip and drops her gaze. “I can handle that.”
Her body language is more than telling me she doesn’t really want to handle that, but I can’t worry about it now.
I want her too damn much.

COVER REVEAL: BLINDNESS BY GINGER SCOTT

One of our favorite new indie authors has a new book coming out very soon! And by the looks of this cover, we realllllyyyyyyy wanna read it!

Blindness
A novel by Ginger Scott

ebook, 350 pages
Expected publication: February 2014 by Ginger Scott

It takes a while to know who you really are. And when you lose your way, sometimes it’s hard to find it again.

Charlie Hudson was on the verge of figuring that out when her dad—the only parent and friend she ever had—died suddenly. She was barely 18, and she was alone.  So she went for easy—playing life safe, running away from a home that harbored nothing but bad memories and challenges and loving a man who would take her away from it all forever.

It’s funny how chance takes over when you need it most. And that’s exactly what brought Cody Carmichael into her life. A former motocross super star, Cody was now happy to be living the blue collar life, spending his days finishing up school and his nights under the hood of some classic car, just trying to keep everything his father taught him alive. Cody and Charlie were living parallel lives, until they finally collided. And the moment he smiled at her, Charlie knew he was the one who would change everything. But was she willing to take the risk?

Cody saw through it all. He saw her—all of her. But would letting him in be too much to take? And if Charlie let herself love him—really love him—could he love her back?

Our Review--
Naked Sushi. Interesting concept? Hot cover? Check and check. Of course we wanted to read this one, because a) it looked fun and b) she gets a job being the plate for naked sushi after getting fired for having sex at work. Ris-to-the-que. :) Sign us up! Yes...the cover was steamy!

The novella, and yes it is a novella so it is a very quick and sexy romp through this love story...but it was somewhat a little over the top in the comedy department...so those parts were a little more parody than rom-com. I wasn't sure what to do with that. But the way these two meet is very interesting. And unbelievable...and HOT! Yes, Courtney, I thought the funny bits were a bit over the top and I couldn't really find my feet with this novel but some may like it.

So for me this one scored major points for sexiness while maybe losing a few points with execution. Being that it is a novella though did not require me to invest a significant amount of time so I recommend for the simple entertainment factor. It isn't a serious story, and definitely shouldn't be taken as such. :) True..this is 100% fantasy and any attempt at reality has to be suspended at the first tap of your reading device.

Our Review---
Like the addict I am, I know enough about my mad love for all things Kristen Ashley to know that if I'm not careful I will overindulge on her books to the point of ignoring my family, my life, my work, and anything else that gets in the way of entering her world.  Because of this, I try to limit my time with her books to holidays, weekends, and summers when I can fully immerse into all things Colorado/alpha/badass/rock chick without the daily time constraints my typical work day forces upon me. We've had to do that haven't we? Because for reals, if not...we would never leave that world...and well, I have no qualms about that actually...lol.

Since Courtney and I have blown through all of the Rock Chick, Dream Man, Unfinished Hero, and Chaos books released I decided it was time to start with the Colorado Mountain series and, as usual, the first book in this series DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Shee-it. No it did not. I like that it has the same flair as the others and I fell in love immediately...but it also brings in that small town America feel with the everyone knows everyone and just a different tone that KA is able to give to each series to make them their own special work of art.

This is the story of Nina and Max. Nina, an American living in England, has come to Gnaw Bone (best name ever for a town, right?!) to take a time out from her fiance and Brit, Niles. She arrives after an exhausting flight, an impending sinus infection, and driving in an unfamiliar place in a snow storm to find that the beautiful A-frame house she's rented for 2 weeks is occupied. After having words with the owner, Max, and storming off to find an alternative place to stay, Nina manages to drive off the road. Too exhausted to try to manage one more thing, she crawls in the back seat, covers up and vows to find solutions when she wakes up. Unbeknownst to her, Max finds her, transports her back to the A-frame, nurses her back to health from the flu (NOT a sinus infection) and the sometimes tumultuous, sometimes sweet, and always entertaining story of Nina and Max begins.

Uhhmmmhmmmm. I am always surprised when the hero is kind of a grade-a jerk in the beginning and are shocked when they get sass back. I am now used to it and find it fraking hilarious because I find this is usually the beautiful start to something even more beautiful even though they make me cringe in a bad way in the beginning. Max don't take no shit, and well...soon finds out that Nina doesn't either. LOVED that.

These two, Nina and Max, are great. The chemistry, the banter, the fights, their equally strong personalities, and interesting backstories keep the pages turning. Nina has had the crappiest luck with men...I mean THE CRAPPIEST...she's managed to find loser after loser. It doesn't help that her dad is one of the biggest douche canoes ever. And Max..well Max had a tragedy that set him off going through women like nobody's business. Do their combined poor track records, the fact that she's engaged and not from there, and that he's got a reputation derail the potential hotness between them? Hell NO!!!!

The odds are definitely stacked against them starting any kind of relationship. Her being engaged to a man in England being the kicker of them all....sooooooo how does she work that out? Uhhhh.....it's pretty insane. And I don't think I can say anything more than it is a freaking fantastic journey...the staying up all night to finish it kind of journey!

Additionally the mystery of who killed Max's nemesis, Nina's asshole stalker, the family distractions, and the soul crushing story of suicide and other horrors create a story that is absolutely impossible to put down. This novel completely hooked me on this series and I absolutely cannot wait to read the next one in line. !!! There is so much meat to this book, that it is seriously more than a romance. It is about this part of Colorado and the people that live there and what they will do to protect their own from bad things happening to them or derailing their happiness. It is awesome, y'all!

Shelley: 5 Stars!!!

Courtney: Also 5 stars!

About the Author---

Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake.

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

REVIEW: IN THE WIND BY ANNIE BUREN

Doing her best to make the most out of life's adventures, Mary's plan never included paying off student loans by cleaning up other people's mess at Gurst International. But when that mess gets deeper and darker than her wild imagination can conceive, Mary finds herself in over her head in a world she's far more involved in than she knows. Her only road to safety is traveled in the passenger seat next to a man who has spent half his life imprisoned and most his life fighting for it, while an underground war and its killers close in on them.

Mary believes in taking all the worth and happiness one can get out of life in order to live free. Ash has lived his life for freedom without knowing what it means. Mary is caught in the run for her life, and Ash in the power of his enemies and the binds of his demons, when they embark on the greatest adventure they've ever known—the one that could lead them to freedom, acceptance, and, maybe, to love.

Our Review---

Starting in the wind, I think we really had no idea at all what to expect. It sounded to have a "things that go bump in the night, and scare me to death" vibe...with this guy that was imprisoned, and a girl who gets caught up in the middle of it all. In the end, we get what I have told Shel a few times a cross between The Edge of Never & Killing Sarai. In a word: epic!Yep. Totally had no clue what to expect with this one. I guarantee this is one of the most under-reviewed books of the year. There is nothing out there about it...which is too bad because it's a good read.

This novel is part RUN FOR YOUR LIVES, part us vs. them, and part love story. It's told from viewpoint of Mary--an under employed, head in the clouds, young woman. She's working at a new job where she hears unusual and suspicious sounds...chalks it up as paranoia only to be plunged into the mystery of those noises one fateful night when Ash (our main male character) snatches her from her job. From here on out a story of mad scientists and a corrupt corporation mixes with the back stories of Ash and Mary as they try to outrun the mysterious force of people out to kill them and the group that Ash is affiliated with.

I would be completely freaked by that...but since I'm pretty paranoid in general...working in a corporation cleaning by myself at night would not be my ideal job. But when the unknown sounds turn into unknown people...well things start getting cray cray. The action is turned on and doesn't really stop for anyone or anything. Mary is essentially kidnapped...she doesn't know by whom and she doesn't know why. I again, would be completely freaked...but Ash proves early on that he is in charge...and things slowly evolve between them because Mary (like myself) chatters non-stop when she is nervous (and I think she is nervous a lot!) so he has no choice but to kiss her to shut her up! Cue cuteness + fun times! And secrets + spying + running + all of our favorite things!

There's some intrigue, some paranoia, and a constant sense of danger as Mary and Ash crisscross the country to get from one safe house to another. By the time we get to the end of their story, some of the mystery has been revealed but there are so many questions to be answered---I want to know more about the bad guys (and the good ones too, for that matter), more about Mary and Ash and their backgrounds, and how will this all end. According to the end, there is another novel coming in this series but I haven't seen anything about it..yet.

Yeah...I wanna know more about the corporation. What are they doing? Why are they doing it? How are they getting away with experimenting on humans and no one knows about this? Then there is the group that Ash has been associated with practically his entire life. They are basically the resistance...but how did they get their start? Why can they never dismantle the bad guys? How many more people must die for this cause? How will Mary and Ash find their way to one another and keep going on this path. Ahhhh, the insanity and the question are killer! But I really loved this book even though there was quite a bit we don't know by the end of it!

Fun Facts about FAST FORWARD

·        I started writing the first book in the Second Chances series (No Reverse) the day I found out I was pregnant. I was so overjoyed, but it got me thinking about women or girls for whom the news isn’t all it should be. That was how I started talking to Cassie and she told me what happened with Josh when she was seventeen. Yeah, I’m a bit batty like that. I wrote Fast Forward with my baby girl on my lap.
·        In my head, Josh looks very much like Channing Tatum in Dear John. He‘s a very decent guy with a flaming temper underneath the apparent self-control and coolness.
·        Sam—who is a secondary character in No Reverse and Fast Forward—is also in my paranormal series, The Oxford Trilogy. Readers keep telling me how much they love him and I hope I can give him his own girl and his own book very soon. So watch the space!
·        No Reverse was supposed to be a stand-alone novel. I reached my word count and there was still so much to happen before Cassie and Josh could be a family at last. I didn’t want the ending to be rushed, but I didn’t want the book to be a New Adult version of War and Peace (like very, very long ;-) hence the sequel Fast Forward.
·        I love Emma Stone’s voice. It’s all raspy and husky. I read it was because of a bad bout with colic when she was a baby. She kept screaming and screaming. I used that for Cassie although I twisted the story a little bit. She’s a Country singer and her voice is something she values and works on very much.

Our Review---
This is ANOTHER quick read that I really enjoyed; it was fun and well written. Jordan has this great website to help other single women avoid the pitfalls of the dating scene she's had to endure. Forest is a young, single, power player in D.C. While she's 'undercover' getting details on a slimeball for her site, they spot each other and despite their denials, they are TOTALLY interested in each other! With a little cat and mouse and a little 'help' from their friends, they take a chance to see if this lust-y thing they have is anything more than that.

I really liked it too. I was completely surprised, though I'm not sure why. I have a great love affair with Harlequin novels (aka, i love 'em) and I really enjoyed this one. Elle and Jordan are seriously hilarious. They are seriously soul sistas, looking out for the greater good of the women of D.C. (I mean c'mon..there are some weird dudes in this book!) but at the end of the day they are holding out hope for the one. That was super super fun.

The website queries, the banter between Elle and Jordan and Wen and Forest, the balance of steam and story, the low angst and HEA ending all make this a very pleasurable read. From this read alone, I'd definitely be interested in reading more of Dimon's work. I think I enjoyed it that much more because we knew it was a novella (we've been trying to make sure so we're not disappointed when it ends) going in and for that reason I was aware of the pace of the novella and these peeps relationship. Sometimes ya just have to go with the flow, and I was in love with Forest from the get go. He is ultra alpha, but the back and forth with Jordan knocks him off his feet. It was epic!

One of my favorite short reads this month! Yep, yep! Check it out, yo!
