Grind Synopsis:
Grind (verb): to weaken or destroy gradually Macy Carrington is not the woman I once thought her to be. What she does not allow her heart to feel, she gives with her body. The sex between us is explosive and depraved. I’ve done things with her that would never have crossed my wildest imagination, and I can’t ever seem to get enough. But now I want more from her. I want to figure out her dark secret, expose it and then help her to heal from it. I know, without a doubt, that Macy is capable of love, and I will grind her down until I make her accept the truth of it. Grind (verb): to wear down, polish, or sharpen by friction Cal Carson is not the man I once thought him to be. Strong, determined, sexy as hell and a beast in the bedroom. He is every woman’s fantasy. He is my fantasy. But no matter how hard Cal tries to grind me down, my heart and secrets are mine and mine alone.Goodreads Link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25184940-grind
Shel: If you read my review for the first book in this series, you'll see that I wasn't too crazy about Cal. He came off way too arrogant and self-righteous to me and the only thing we get from Macy is her journal entries, so it's hard to know how exactly how she feels in many of the moments. Good news, though, this novel gave me more to know about Cal and I definitely found myself liking him more. Court: Well, I found myself liking him more...but he still does things that make me want to hurt him. Does that make sense? I hope. I find it interesting that we aren't getting more female POV, and it is refreshing from a writing perspective, but from an OMG I have to know what secret she is keeping perspective I am dying for more from her! So...I'll just be over here dying!
Shel: When it comes to Macy he's still on the verge of a raging hard on every time he thinks of her, but he begins to make room for her in his heart too. He takes notice of her reactions, he asks questions, and starts to try to understand her more and judge her less. Let's just call it what it what it is: caring; he's beginning to care for her (even if he doesn't exactly know what to do with these emotions). The actions and risks he takes to push her out of her shell and into his life are evidence of what he's feeling and it's a welcome turn of events. Court: Right. I find their dynamic also refreshing because it isn't insta-love. Every step forward they take, and even every step back...is hard fought, and worked for. There is no punches pulled with Macy...She is who she is, and she doesn't care what you think of that. But she is also tender hearted, I think...and as we find out more about her through Cal, I find myself really rooting for her to find herself. I don't think I'm too far off base with that.
Shel: In addition to watching their relationship begin to happen beyond sex, we get the beginnings of Macy's story with her family and a hint of who she is behind those walls. If the ending of this novel, tells me anything, it tells me that we're in for some painful times with these two. Court: YES <insert angsty throws self down on the floor pose here> One thing we know that Sawyer does well is play our emotions exactly how she wants them, so I am nervous about this. But excited. It's very contradictory.
Shel: In this novel, we also cover some ground that I'm not sure we've seen in Sawyer's books before-- a sex club scene. As if they sex in both novels in this series wasn't steamy enough, she takes us to a sex club--and that entire thing was an interesting and unexpected part of this novel. Court: This is the part that I was nervous for Macy about Cal again. HOWEVER...he was honest, and I can't fault him that. It is a wild scene. I loved it. And anything else I say will be a spoiler! So, zipping up.
Shel: As we wait for the conclusion of this series, I can only hope that Cal and Macy continue to be what we've seen so far--they don't play games and they're honest with each other. I know these two traits will be important for what's to come and I'm really curious to see where Sawyer will take us next with these two characters. Court: I am very, very excited to find out more. And luckily for us, this series isn't spaced out too far so come back! We'll be having the gritty end here too...I am sure I will be flailing about for that too.
