The rules are the same. I can't open the door. I can't leave. I can't kill anyone.
The only difference is, I don't set the rules anymore. Guards in grey uniforms do. It is everything I never wanted and everything I always deserved. I write to you now, from a prison cell. My home for the next twenty to thirty years.
That's the going term for murder.

Our Review:
Shel: I have no words, really. None. But I need words because I'm supposed to be writing this review about how everyone should read this book [SIDE NOTE: everyone should totally read this book] but all I can do is think about what I just read and how to explain it without spoiling it and it's
Shel: IMPOSSIBLE. This review is impossible. Sort of. Not really. Because I can tell you what I liked about this book without being spoilerific, I think. Maybe?
Shel: 1. I loved how fierce Deanna is. She's 100% herself and if someone doesn't like it? Welp, she has zero fucks to give. She's intense. She's a little crazy..maybe a lot crazy. She's fearless--almost too much so. She's also so freaking emotionally numb/bankrupt/in denial that I wanted to shake her, send her to therapy, and smother her with love. As much as I admired her strength, I felt so sad that she was living in her head, in her fear, and in her unwillingness to even see if she could improve. Court: Deanna, Deanna, Deanna. What to say about Deanna that hasn't already been said. When we first met her in The Girl in 6E (and even before that in On Me, in Me, Dead Beneath Me - we had no idea that her journey would arc in the way that it has. The best I can say as Shel did without spoiling it for you is that her journey is a wild, in your face, oh-my-holy-hell-I'm going to die if I don't know what happens next roller coaster ride. And every single page, and every single chapter was written in such that I was constantly thinking...will my prediction be correct? Probably not, right? Because if I'm thinking it...that little thread that is dangling to be pulled will probably just unleash all sorts of stuff to fall on me. And that's how I feel about the rest of what happened!
Shel: 2. I loved Mike. I have no idea if all of the things he did can actually be done but I loved that Alessandra Torre made a character who could do anything from his wheelchair. I love how much he cared for Deanna. I love how loyal and protective he was of her. And if this series continues, I would love to see more of him. Court: It is odd how conflicted I feel about each of the men in this book. Each one brought something completely different, and completely something she needed to her life. I love though that Mike was consistent in his loyalty.
Shel: 3. Jeremy/Derek--these two intrigued me. I feel like there's more story for them although that could be wishful thinking? I'd like to say more about what I'm thinking but I think that would be too revealing so I'll just say that I am still thinking about these two and am very curious about what they're thinking right now. Court: Ok...so we obviously need to chat. But me too. If there was one thing that I wish were more "complete" if you will, it would be Derek. I again can't say much as to why I'm wondering so much about him, but I feel like if I were ever to think of a voice and how it sounds like...the description of this guy can bring many a thought. And, besides...I think he needs more pages too. As does Jeremy. Eep!
Shel: And finally, I have to say that you, Alessandra Torre, just keep surprising me in the best ways. I love that you are completely fearless in what you write and you continue to try different things.
Court: Wow. Could that be more perfect. AT has been absolutely fearless in the journey she takes in each book. Pushing the boundaries. Pushing her writing. Pushing us as a reader. Just when we think we have this whole thing figured out, she changes the game...and we just have to hang on tight. And it is brilliant.
Thank you for always making me a happy reader,
Shelley
And until next time, Alessandra and y'all...she keeps us coming back for more, more, more.
