REVIEW:
Shel: Alessandra Torre gives us a new Love, Chloe by taking the original series (posted several times a week to the Cosmo website) and cleaning it up--making it a more linear and cohesive plot. If you were a fan of the series, we think you're going to love this full length novel. For those who haven't met Chloe, you haven't missed anything (and if you're curious, the series *is* still up for free on the Cosmo website) by not reading the serial and here's why we think you'll love this novel:
Shel: It's really fun to read--you get this single girl in the city vibe (formerly rich edition) and you feel like you're an insider to the inner workings of the upper crust of society. Chloe and friends are so unexpectedly kind (not the rich bitches you might suspect them to be, especially when you see how awful the parents are) and have more depth and heart than I may have predicted. The chapters are really quick and the characters are fun and sexy and funny and 'watching' Chloe as she figures out who she wants to be as she falls out of love with Vic and into love with Carter was gratifying. Court: I really have become obsessed with Two Broke Girls on TV, and I felt a kinship with Chloe that I feel for Caroline who had been kicked out of her upper east side penthouse for mistakes of her father and was newly poor and afloat in her life. I really loved that Alessandra, one of our favorite authors, put her own spins on this one...and the journey to whether or not Chloe would bounce back up on her feet was one we enjoyed so much!
The combination of characters was also interesting:
- Shel: Nicole + Chanel + Clarke had me either shaking my head or raising my eye brows. Court: Amen. Chanel...that was really a 'shake my head at people' moment, but I liked that she and Chloe got on so well. Somebody had to care that she was around!
- Shel: Vic + Joey + Carter had me shaking my head or laughing OR furious or swooning. These men and the way they factored into Chloe's life kept me on my toes. Vic made me want to hurt someone, I thought I'd hate Joey (I didn't) and Carter, while not flawless, I loved how much he adored Chloe (and how very little of the angst from the novel was derived from them but from outsiders). Court: I grew to like their dynamic eventually. I wished that we had more interaction from them earlier, but with everything else going on with Chloe and the men in her life...and women...well, I suppose that in the end it makes sense. The writing is original and the plot solid, funny and swoony in all of the right places! And the pace was fast, and didn't lag. I love Alessandra's ability to really make me doubt the characters and keeps me on my toes to make me pay attention to their intentions!
- Shel: Benta + Cammie are truly the best--I loved the diversion and hilarity they provided. Court: I loved how honest they were with Chloe when she acted like an ostrich with her head in the sand when things got hard. I am secretly hoping we get more about them!
Shel: There was a definite sense of lightheartedness woven throughout this novel--this is no deep, dark, serious introspective work. It's romantic and fun and light--an escape. One of the many things I love about Alessandra Torre is how vividly she creates pinnacle scenes with the characters that are so vivid that I can imagine myself there in the world that she's creating; when I'm reading her novels I'm always completely engaged. Court: Heard that. I really enjoyed this book, and love how each story she gives us is always original in characters and voice!
If you want to read something that will give you the warm fuzzies, grab this one and enjoy!
