Shel: When I saw that Jodi Ellen Malpas was writing a new stand alone novel, I was very curious. Everything I've read of hers was in a series and I couldn't wait to see what she'd do! Going into the novel, I knew that J.E.M. knew how to write an alpha male (Exhibit A--This Man Series) and so I anticipated a little taste of that and got it ... and then some. Court: And just look at that cover! We love complex stories about people in the public eye, and this one is no different. There is a lot to love and not just because JEM wrote it! Shel: Jake is a brooding, ex-military man who needs a job. He needs a focus and something to take his attention away from all of the mysterious bad stuff in his past. Enter Camille --a model, paparazzi favorite, daughter of a bazillionaire, wonderfully headstrong, and currently being threatened (hence Jake being hired as her bodyguard). Before they even met, I knew they'd met their match and I was not wrong--the sparks were flying as were their smart retorts and barbs. I LOVED IT!! Nothing gets more excited than some young, hot, Brits talking smack to each other. Throw in a threatening situation and I'm hooked. (I'm so easy, y'all).
I'll admit, the broody bodyguard and the sweet and smart socialite (and how they'd fight and make up) were what got me interested but then I got completely sucked in the all of the unanswered questions--the mystery of Jake and who was after Camille and what, exactly was Logan, Camille's father, hiding?!! Or was he hiding anything? Malpas threw me with the mixed signals Camille's brother, TJ, and Logan were giving off so I was constantly on guard and suspicious and trying to figure out how all the pieces of the puzzle fit. Court: Yes, on the surface this one might seem cut and dry and simple. It is anything but, and I was hanging on to every word, and every page and could not put it down. So much that, I finished it in less than a day. It is one of those "shirk every other responsibility you have and read this book" books and I am so excited about it. I absolutely loved the dual point of view so we get enough of both of our main characters. Don't forget about Heather too, y'all, as she is a great best friend and a great supporting character. And Lucinda!
Shel: Plus --wtf with the girl in the picture?! JAKE!! I NEED ANSWERS!!!! I had to know !! Court: The what ifs tortured me on and on and on with that one!
Shel: So with those questions egging me on I read as Jake and Camille struggled to not like each other ...god when they quit fighting it it was a beautiful thing. ...and along the way I got to know these characters and I laughed with them and worried with them and was curious and just when I thought things were okay...it went sideways. WHAT JUST HAPPENED. NOOOO!! That last bit was harrowing. Court: The chemistry of these characters just seeps out of the pages. And just how well plotted out the book is, y'all, is epic. I kept thinking I could figure out what would happen and then we took a hard turn and it just kept me topsy turvy until I finally figured out that I WOULD NOT figure out what happens next as much as I tried. And that is not a bad thing at all! But! I loved the back story on both of these people, and I honestly loved that her mother turned out to be a little wacky, but a good person.
Shel: I was pleasantly surprised at how unexpected the answers to my questions were and how things resolved themselves and by the end I was breathing easier. Whew. Court: ME TOOOOOO! Gah! What a ride it is. And it is sexy as all get out, and that was a fun part too!
Shel: And I'm not to proud to beg Jodi Ellen Malpas for a short story with more about where and how they are now--I'm very curious about what happens next with these characters because I have a feeling it won't be easy for them but I bet it will be so rewarding. Court: Yes, we get a complete-ness, but more to come out of it, and I ain't too proud to beg either for a spin off for a secondary character or two!
