Blurb:
I was born to play and bred to win.

My priorities were instilled in me early on—family and football. Those ideals led me to TGU and a coach whose ironclad principles mirrored my own.

With one last college season to play, my goal was singular—get drafted. By realizing my NFL dream, I could save my family, our ranch, and the only home I’d ever known.

Two birds, one ball.

Playing hard was my only option, but there’s always a wild card.

For all of my planning and hard work, I never anticipated falling for the coach's daughter. Harper was a fair catch, but who knew loving her could be the one play to throw my career before it started or that the weight of our secret would change the game.

*This is book #3 of The Underdogs Series, but you can read as a stand-alone. *Formerly published in Team Player 2 but is now a 107k full length novel with an extended epilogue.EXCERPT:
Harper

“I’ve missed you, you know? More than you can imagine.”

“Can’t imagine it at all,” he says, picking through a book he’s not reading.

“Can I help you two?” One of the store sales associates asks, and I shake my head and smile. When she takes her leave, I look over to Lance who stands fuming on the other side of a table filled with loose items. We’re in a mismatch shop full of mostly cheap junk, and I can’t imagine him finding anything for his mother here.

“Lance, I have missed you. Horribly.”

“Could have fooled me.”

I can only take so much. Irritated, I lift a designer coffee mug from the table.

“You like this for your mom?”

“No.”

“How about this?”

“Nope.” He’s not even looking at what’s in my hands.

“You sure? It’s a hide purse. Cute for a rancher’s wife, don’t you think?” This gets his attention, and stormy eyes lift to mine.

“Would you buy that for you?”

I look it over and shake my head. “Not really my style.”

“Bet it’s not.”

I can feel my ears reddening. Fuming, I eye a box on the shelf, snatch it and shove it into his chest. “How about this giant fucking purple dildo and matching anal plug!? Think mom will like that?”

He looks up completely unaffected, “Nope.”

“I don’t think we’re in the right place,” Tossing the box down, I stalk out of the cluttered shop and into the department store next to it. He’s hot on my heels.

“Got that fucking right.”

I turn back to see he’s spoiling for a fight and release a stressed breath. Fighting with him is the last thing I want to do. “Look, lets, just…” I search around and pull a sweater from the closest rack. “How about this? Simple, elegant.”

“You think Mom’s simple, huh? I’ll give her your regards.”

“That’s it.” I hook the sweater back on to the rack and close the space between us, forcing his eyes to mine. “God, you’re still a brute, aren’t you? You haven’t changed a bit. Still pig-headed as hell.”

“Pig-headed?” He opens his mouth in mock shock and covers his chest with his hand. “How dare you.”

I’m in between fight or flight, but I’ve been dodging this long enough. My heart can’t take more confrontation. I missed him too much. His eyes flare with satisfaction at my irritation. “Misery loves company, right, Lance?”

“Never said I was miserable.”

“You don’t have to. Did you come to New York just to torture me?”

“Maybe.”

“Rub it in on what I’m missing out on?”

A voice sounds from next to us. “Is there something I can help you find today?”

We both turn to the woman with lasers in our eyes, and she swallows. I clear my throat. “We’re fine. Thank you.”

Lance winks at the woman, his eyes scanning her form. “Maybe you can help me?”

“You son of a bitch,” I hiss, before walking away from the table. His voice rings out next to me as I rip through a rack of scarves.

“Good to know you care, Priss, gotta admit, it’s surprising.”

I reel on him. “Don’t you dare! Leaving you was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I had to make a clean break. I had just lost everyone that mattered to me. I was losing my mind.”

“I got pissed for one day, and you went off the grid.”

“And you let me go because you knew no matter how much we wanted it to work, it couldn’t. You have no idea what I went through!”

“What you went through? Do you know I spent six months ranting to an Uber driver named Dave because everyone on my team hated me when the truth came out?” He stomps after me as I pull sweater after sweater off the rack. “Troy jumped ship after he got drafted. I had no one but Tony and those fights.”

I turn to him with twenty sweaters in my arms. “Jenner? When did y’all get so tight?”

“When shit got tough, and my fucking girlfriend bailed!” He glares down at me, his breaths coming out fast.

“Guys, we’re going to need you to take this outside.” A woman whom I assume is the store manager approaches us cautiously.

I look around the store and see all eyes are on us, especially the women sizing him up. “He’s available ladies,” I snap, laying the sweaters on a nearby table, “I’m willing to bet he comes really cheap.” He’s on my heels as I push through the glass of the department store.

“Oh, was I supposed to wait for you? Must have missed that memo. That’s it, you must want a saint. That’s why you didn’t stay.”

“I was twenty years old and alienated from a place I didn’t want to be anyway.”

“Good to know.”

“That’s not the way I meant it. And you know damn well until you, I was only there to appease my Dad, who I barely speak to now.”

“I’m sorry about that, I am, but that’s on him. And what in the hell are you talking about ‘alienated’?”

“Forget it.” I pull on my gloves as heavy snow starts to come down. “I think we’ve concluded our tour for today.”

He glances around the sidewalk. “Well, no need to show me more, I hate this fucking place!”

“And why is that? Not enough free-range chickens?!”

His eyes flare. “You digging on the ranch now, Priss? I saw a fucking rat the size of a cat on my run this morning!”

“Probably has better manners than you, shit head.”

“Pulling out the big guns now, huh? There’s that backbone. I was wondering where it went.”

“Go home, Lance, you hate it here. And you obviously hate me.”

“Just the opposite. It’s impossible, and believe me, I’m trying!”

“Well, I hope you succeed! Thanks for stopping by, Mary Poppins. Best Christmas ever! Make sure to bulldoze the nativity scene on your way out!”

“Fuck this.” He throws his hands up and eyes me warily before turning and walking away.

“Merry Christmas to you, too!”

Flying by Megan Hart

Ever hear of wanderlust? Every other weekend, Stella buys a ticket on the next flight out of town and leaves her life behind. Home is a place with too many memories, and departure is the sweetest possible distraction. As soon as she arrives at her destination, Stella visits the airport bar. She orders a drink and waits for the right guy to come along. A bored businessman, a backpacker, a baggage handler just off shift. If he's into a hot, no-strings hookup, he's perfect. Each time is a thrilling escape from reality that gives the term layover a whole new meaning. When Stella meets the enigmatic Matthew in Chicago one weekend, she hits some serious turbulence. Something about him tells her she's not the only one running from the past. The connection between them is explosive, and for the first time, one taste is not enough for Stella. But returning to find a gorgeous man waiting for her is the easy part& facing the reason she's there is a whole other matter.

...I'm honestly having a hard time writing this review because I really, really don't want to repeat the synopsis and I don't know that my simple words will form coherent sentences that will express how much I enjoyed this novel. So I'll do what I always do when I'm uncertain--I'll make you a list:

  • Stella is wonderfully flawed and has a ton of strength.
  • Stella is honest--I loved her honesty. She refused to play games and even when she knew it would hurt, she held her ground or did the difficult thing and forced the hard conversations.
  • Stella is a great mom and kind to her ex-husband's new wife (I loved that the new wife wasn't made to be the wicked witch of the west)
  • Matthew was infuriating and sweet and INFURIATING.
This novel isn't really plot heavy, in my opinion. It's more character driven; you're in the interior of Stella's mind, watching Stella fall in love and unravel and mourn and deal. Deal? Yep, deal. She functions when things go not so well; she doesn't force her self to get up and suddenly soar back to life--she simply exists. I found that to be something I could strongly relate to and I appreciated those very real and honest moments. I liked that Megan Hart didn't pretty up how numbing dealing with loss and grief can be.

As I read Flying and lived in its fog of melancholy, I found myself highlighting so sections that completely capture how painful and honest and real Stella's experience felt.

I know you're wondering--but what about the erotic parts? Other characters? Things? Stuff?!! Yes all of those things exist and some are definitely more important than others at various times. The heat is there. The other characters are there to enhance and not distract..but for me this novel was more about the internal life of Stella.

The thing I'm pondering now is the end. It's not so much how it ended, though I'm sure if I jumped on Goodreads I'd see someone comment on it; it's the abrupt nature of it, I think. And it's weird because it's not that I didn't like it, necessarily, it's that it was not quite what I expected. I literally swiped the corner of my kindle a few times and then tapped it HARD because I thought it was frozen. HAHA.

About CD Reiss
CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets.
Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.
She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

REVIEW: Disavow by Karina Halle

OUR REVIEW:

I must admit that I was skeptical that Pascal could be redeemed in Disavow because Karina Halle did such a great job of making him a really unlikeable character in the previous two novels in this series. But Karina did what she does best--she made a believer out of me. She somehow turned him from the absolute worst to a sympathetic character and I'm going to say that creating a character like Gabrielle to transform him was crucial to me liking him. I honestly cannot even believe I'm writing the words "like him" when it comes to Pascal but here I am, writing it (I think the ending really helped get me there). The addition of a strong, albeit maybe a little delusional (only because what she thought she was capable seemed so unreasonable) Gabrielle kept Pascal on his toes and managed to soften him from most hated to actually understandable or at the very least, less horrible, in relation to his terrible past.

BUY IT: https://amzn.to/2wNgEgs

SYNOPSIS:

From New York Times bestselling author Karina Halle comes a seductive novel of riches, romance, and redemption.
In the Dumont fashion empire, no heir has a reputation as decadent, arrogant, and ruthless as that of Pascal Dumont. Every transgression, an indecent pleasure. Every woman, a conquest. And none is more challenging than his new personal assistant, Gabrielle Caron. She’s defiant, alluring, and a mystery Pascal can’t wait to solve.
A former family servant and daughter of the head maid, Gabrielle’s returned as suddenly as she left eight years ago. No longer an awkward teen, the ethereal young beauty has amassed a wealth of resolve. She’ll need it. In hire to the devilishly charming scion, she’s come back for one reason only. And she dare not whisper why.
But as the nights grow more intimate at the Dumont maison, Gabrielle realizes that the last man she believed in is the one man she can trust with her secrets. For Pascal, falling in love means more than his own redemption. It could mean saving Gabrielle’s very life as they confront a dark and scandalous past…together.

Disavow was a really great way to end this over the top, soap opera-ish series. It demonized the right person and brought closure to this messed up family and their significant others. I thoroughly enjoyed this escape into this world and am eager to see where Karina Halle takes us next.

REVIEW: Revenge by Laurelin Paige

REVENGE (Slay #3) by Laurelin Paige
Release Date: February 25th

OUR REVIEW:

***It occurred to me part way through read Revenge that there may indeed be people who shouldn't be reading this novel due to some of the traumatic issues that it confronts and if I neglected to say so in a prior review, please accept my apology and also do some research before you read (if you have some abuse triggers).

Boy oh boy did I have some thoughts when I was reading Revenge. I think I was instantly lulled into a sense of happiness that Celia and Edward seemed to be on the same page--they were getting along (as well as they can) and the relationship they were forging seemed to be working. As the novel progressed though, I became more and more proud of the person Celia was striving to become and more disenchanted with Edward. She seemed to be growing and trying and working on becoming who she needed and wanted to be and he seemed to be so caught up in his control and his plans and his ego that even when he showed how much he loved her, I wasn't satisfied. I wanted him to take ten steps back and look at her, truly see who she was striving to be and who she needed him to be but nooooo. Nope. Not yet, though I see a glimmer of promise and willingness to perhaps try to take it down a notch or two. I suspect that he's going to get worse before he gets better...especially because of how the novel ended...and I also suspect Celia may dig in her heels a little too, in the next book in this series.

All told, this novel was just as addictive to read as the other three in this series and I'm eager to see what happens next with this entire cast of characters.

Blurb: Their relationship changes again when Celia learns the devil takes care of his own. Edward Fasbender is my savior. From the ashes of who I once was, he is helping me to rise. He has a list of people who have wronged him. And now he's adding names to that list. Names that I gave him. And we will have our revenge.

Excerpt: Inside the windowed room, I set one of the glasses on a table next to the loveseat then dimmed the overhead before taking the other glass to the armchair across from it. The string of lights that had been put up outside for the party were still lit, creating a romantic mood. Not exactly what I was going for, but it would do. In my experience, the darker setting made confessions easier. I stretched my neck, easing the knots there as I looked out over the yard. The day had been busy and full, and the party had been, by all accounts, successful, but I’d spent the entire time preoccupied with Edward. Even when entertaining strangers or running around trying to find Ilsa to tell her we were out of toilet paper, I’d been aware of my husband. He was a magnetic force, always pulling my thoughts and my body in his direction. Like gravity holding me in his orbit. I’d never felt that way about anyone before. Not just that in love but also that attached. I was still reeling from the newness of it, eighteen months after we’d wed. I was also still adjusting to the way he affected me. How he’d brought me peace yet could stir up levels of jealousy within me that I’d never thought possible. His trip to the garden with Marion was innocent—it had to be considering the way he grinned at me when he’d returned. The devil himself wouldn’t flaunt his discretions so openly. Would he?

About the Author: With millions of books sold worldwide, Laurelin Paige is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author. She is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Game of Thrones or Letterkenny, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. She's also a proud member of Mensa International though she doesn't do anything with the organization except use it as material for her bio. She is represented by Rebecca Friedman.

REVIEW: The Wives by Tarryn Fisher

OUR REVIEW:
I'm a huge fan of Tarryn Fisher. I love her fierceness and that she embraces the ugly and pretty, equally. I love that she's devoted to empowering women and that she pushes us all to empower ourselves and those around us. I love what she stands for and that it seeps into everything she does. I see her personality wink at us in various places in all of her novels and it's something I've come to look forward to when I read her work.

In The Wives I swear I saw little bits and pieces of the fierce author and the fierce author persona as her character, Thursday, contemplates what exactly is happening to her and how in the hell she ended up in the situation she finds herself in. Many times, though, I saw a character who seemed so opposite of what I think of when I think of Fisher's strong heroines--she sometimes seemed so lost, so unclear of her purpose, out of control. And it was this disarray of personality traits that I think were a little jarring. Thursday, the character, seemed so self contained and then so completely unraveled. She seemed to be at the mercy of those around her and less making those around her bow to her will. There were times I was so confounded by her narrative and other times I was completely absorbed.

To say that I was kept on my toes, would be an understatement but I'm not sure what to make of it.

I felt both disconnected and connected to Thursday and what was happening to her, with her, and around her. There were times I didn't understand her and how she got into the situation she was in...I still don't know if I understand that, to be honest. Then there were times when I truly felt her fear and her drive to find answers and felt attuned to her.

I don't know. I don't know what to do with this novel and my thoughts. Parts really worked for me--parts of the pacing and dialogue and meditations on life and people really worked. Then there were parts that felt flat, underdeveloped, and needing more time and space to let me know these characters more, better.

So I'm leaving you as I was left: conflicted.

SYNOPSIS:

Thursday’s husband, Seth, has two other wives. She’s never met them, and she doesn’t know anything about them. She agreed to this unusual arrangement because she’s so crazy about him.

But one day, she finds something. Something that tells a very different—and horrifying—story about the man she married.

What follows is one of the most twisted, shocking thrillers you’ll ever read.

You’ll have to grab a copy to find out why.

REVIEW: WHITNEY BARBETTI'S HE SAVED ME & TEN BELOW ZERO

Julian
I’ve come to understand that I’ll always find her. She’s my north star, my sense of direction. In her, I’ve found my home. She tells me I saved her. But the truth is, she saved me.

But nothing good can ever last. Andra’s keeping secrets. She’s holding something back. I’m trying, desperately, to anchor her. To let me in, to let me help.

But will all my efforts end up with a ghost of a girl I love?

Andra
I'm used to disappearing. Vanishing into thin air, without a trace of who I've been or where I've gone.

But it’s so much harder to do with a broken heart and no hope for a happy ending. Sometimes the only people who can put all the pieces of us back together are the ones we least expect to. That's what Julian did for me.

Julian found me. But now, all Six wants is to keep me locked up, away from the world, away from the Monster. I can't live like that. It's not living at all. Because I still have unfinished business.

And I'm going to make sure the Monster gets what’s coming to him.

Paperback
Published December 18th 2014 (first published 2014

OUR REVIEW: (ETA: These review got lost in our drafts folder and are finally seeing the light of day!)

Shel: First things FIRST. You have to read He Found Me before you read He Saved Me (which is probably evident because of
the way we posted it...but just wanted to warn you. This novel picks up not too shortly after book #1 and it actually starts with
Julian's perspective. We don't get much of his POV but I was happy to have what we did.

As with book 1, book 2 also has that slow burn. Rather than move quickly from one plot point to the next, we live with Andra
as she works through how she will get rid of the Monster and get her life back. We get to see her anger and love develop as
we watch her seek vengeance and fall deeper in love with Julian...it's an interesting journey. Add in Six and Mira and things get
infinitely more interesting and intriguing.

By the end of He Saved Me we definitely get more answers to the questions we had about Andra's life before Julian and yet
I still had questions..not in a bad way, in a curious one. I'm hopeful that when Six and Mira's book comes out I'll have more
intel about these interesting characters and who they are and how they ended up where they did. I'd love to know what
Andra and Julian are doing now...

In here,” he said, pushing on the skin above my heart, “you're ten below zero. And you’re closer to death than I am.”

My name is Parker. My body is marked with scars from an attack I don’t remember. I don’t want to remember. I choose to live my life by observation, not through experience. While people are laughing and kissing and connecting, I’m in the corner. Watching them live. I’m indifferent to everything, everyone. The only emotion I feel with any kind of depth is annoyance, and I feel it often.

A text message sent to the wrong number proves to be my undoing.

His name is Everett, but I call him rude. He’s pushy, he’s arrogant, he crowds my personal space, and worst of all: he makes me feel.

He chooses to wear all black, all the time, as if he’s waiting to attend a funeral. Probably because he is.

Everett is dying. And he’s spending his final days living, truly living. In doing so, he’s forcing me to feel, to heal. To come face to face with the demons I suppressed in my memory.

He hurts me, he fulfills me, he completes me. And still, he's dying.

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: If you are a cryer in emotional reads..YOU WILL CRY WHEN YOU READ THIS. Unless you're me. I don't cry very often when I read..it's a flaw I'm working on?

Gosh. This is a hard review to write because I don't want to spoil anything and yet I don't want to re-write what the synopsis says. Hmm. I guess I'll just do this:

HERE ARE A FEW THINGS ABOUT THIS NOVEL:

  • Both Everett and Parker have issues. They are flawed. Parker has the most obvious flaws but Everett has them too..it just takes longer for them to be revealed.
  • As with Whitney's other novels, this one is more focused on an emotional journey of the characters, the action of the plot takes a backseat to that. There IS action and there IS a plot, but the purpose is more less about that and more about what these characters learn about themselves and each other.
  • You get a little Mira/Six/Andra crossover. YAY!
  • This novel feels different than He Found Me and He Saved Me. As I said before there is a plot and action but instead of wondering about a character like the Monster, you're wondering about the two characters you spend the most time with: Everett and Parker. You feel like you know how the story will end, so it's not so much a mystery to be solved but just figuring out the hows and the whys and the whats.
I think out of all three novels, this one really grabbed me the most. I felt for Parker and Everett and I wanted them to be happy and alive and content.

The one note I'd offer, if it's not too presumptuous, is that I'd love more background about her characters and more motive or answers about the subplots. I find them all so very interesting and often want them to be more developed rather than just a cursory part of the characters' stories. Without a doubt, though, I've found myself very curious about Whitney's characters and am eager to see what she does with Six and Mira's story.

COVER REVEAL: The Rich Boy by Kylie Scott

The Rich Boy - CR banner.jpg

The Rich Boy, an all-new, not-to-be missed standalone romance by New York Times bestselling author Kylie Scott is releasing March 9th, and we have the stunning and drop-dead sexy cover!

TheRichBoy EBOOK.jpg

I’m the type of girl who’s given up on fairy tales. So when Beck – the hot new busboy at work – starts flirting with me, I know better than to get my hopes up. Happily ever afters aren’t for the average. I learned that the hard way.
But how can I be expected to resist a man who can quote Austen, loves making me laugh, and seems to be everything hot and good in this world?
Only there’s so much more to him than that.
Billionaire playboy? Check. Troubled soul? Check. The owner of my heart, the man I’ve moved halfway across the country to be with, who’s laying the world at my feet in order to convince me to never leave? Check. Check. Check.
But nobody does complicated like the one percent.
This is not your everyday rags-to-riches, knight-in-shining armor whisking the poor girl off her feet kind of story. No, this is much messier.
