OUR REVIEW:
Snatching up a new Emma Scott novel is an absolute no brainer for us. We know that we're going to have an absorbing, emotional read that we won't want to put down until we get to the last page and Between Hello and Goodbye was exactly that.
You may remember Faith from Someday, Someday, though she was more in the background. This novel is all about her and proving to all parties involved (her boss, herself, Asher, us) that she's more than what she's always appeared to be. From the time we meet her and then when Asher meets her, she's putting off the party girl, shallow vibe but it's very clear that she's so much more than that, if for no other reason than that she willingly took time off to figure some things out for herself. As her time in Hawaii and with Asher ticks by, we see her begin to see herself as the person she is underneath the party girl façade; her confidence and sense of self grows, in part because of the work she's doing but also because of the way Asher sees her. Speaking of Asher, this dude has some issues. Considering his history, it's all understandable but yeeesh, he's got some serious anxieties about letting go of some of the control and adult responsibilities he took on and never seemed to be able to shake off. In many ways those things work for him but sometimes the very things that seemed to save him, hurt him. I couldn't help but like him and his broodiness, though, because underneath his reluctance to letting yet one more person in, he was a true sweetie.
Faith and Asher hooked me from the beginning--their stories of grief and hurt, insecurities and responsibilities and their combined evolution into the characters we are left with at the end are what kept me glued to my kindle all day. At times emotional, other times snarky and fun, Between Hello and Goodbye was a great summer read.
